The Health Information Management (HIM) Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the HIM department, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and security of patient health information. The HIM Lead plays a critical role in managing the flow of health information throughout the organization, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and supporting clinical and administrative staff with the information they need. The role requires strong leadership, technical, and analytical skills to enhance data management systems, improve documentation processes, and foster a culture of patient privacy and data security.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and mentor the HIM team, providing guidance, support, and other duties to include talent acquisition, employee development, employee relations issues, scheduling, training, on-boarding, staff communication, and performance management.
- Oversees the electronic indexing of documents into patient medical charts and ensures the proper housing of related documents in designated systems for multi-state, multi-site medical practice locations.
- Maintains the completeness, accuracy, and protectionof patient medical records and other related documents.
- Leads the use of electronic medical record system tools and applicable work queues to route issues, inaccuracies, and deficiencies impacting medical records and related documents for review, correction and/or reassignment.
- Directs the processes for releasing patient medical record information in accordance with regulatory requirements, federal and state statutes, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Coordinate ongoing training for HIM staff on changes in regulations, new technology, and best practices in health information management.
- Act as a liaison between the HIM department and other departments such as clinical staff, billing, compliance, and IT to ensure smooth data flow and issue resolution.
- Develops policies and procedures to accomplish departmental and organizational initiatives.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Associate degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, or a related field, bachelor’s preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience in health information management or medical records management.
- Prior experience working within an electronic medical record system.
- Previous people leadership experience preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Working knowledge of general healthcare industry data entry practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and ability to adapt to the use of other electronic data entry tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience with navigating various types of records in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to follow direction, work as part of a team, and multi-task.
- Ability to examine records and verify certain information, such as patient identification.
- Ability to examine documents and determine their proper placement within an individual electronic medical record and/or record keeping system.
- Strong understanding of HIM standards, HIPAA regulations, and health data privacy requirements.
- Proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
- Professional demeanor- positive communication, team skills/cross function partnership.
- Provides recommendations to solve problems effectively, employing judgment consistent with standards, practices, policies, and procedures.
- Proficient in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and health information technology.
- Ability to lead and guide others.
